Chancel restoration scheme gets approval

St James is pleased to announce the next phase of the church restoration has been approved by the Diocese of Manchester and a contract has been awarded to Lloyd & Smith of Oldham. Work will start on Monday 25th March 2019, and is anticipated to take 14 weeks.

Lloyd & Smith have had a long association with St James more recently completing roof repairs and re-slating of the north aisle. With over 15 years of experience in specialist restoration and conservation, Lloyd and Smith have established themselves a national reputation in church restoration schemes. Lloyd and Smith will also be undertaking the restoration of our War Memorial as part of this scheme.

Our long-term vision for St James is to make our building a church fit for the 21st Century, one that will serve the local community of Milnrow on a daily basis rather than just at service times. Our commitment was always to restore the chancel so that the building remains inexcusably recognised as a church, a place of worship.

Once completed, phase 2 of our vision will involve closer links with the local community and local authority to develop an ambitious plan to ensure the remainder of the building can serve the needs of Milnrow better. St James would like to thank Friends of Milnrow Parish for their continued support. Without all the hard work of volunteers at Village Treasures none of these projects would be possible.

Heritage Lottery Fund grant secured for War Memorial restoration project

  • Walter Tann thanks Cllr Andy Kelly for the support in securing HLF grant for our War Memorial restoration project.

Everyone at St James is delighted to announce that we have been successful in our application for a £10,000 grant for the restoration of or War Memorial.

For the past 12 months numerous fund raising activities have been supported by the wider community of Milnrow raising Almost £5,000. The award of our HLF grant now means that work can start in the next few weeks restoring the memorial and reinstating paths to and around the memorial.

St James welcomes Rev Janet Pitman

On Monday 4th February 2019 Rev Janet Pitman was inducted into her new post as minister to the Joint Benefice of St James Milnrow and St Thomas’ by Bishop Mark, the Bishop of Middleton.

Supported by her family, members of both congregations and of the local community Janet was welcomed to Milnrow and Newhey. it was a welcome end to what has been a relatively short interregnum of 9 months.

Janet and her family come to us from the Oldham area. She trained in Manchester and has a wealth of experience working with people both in her previous work and as a minister.

We look forward to working with Janet as we move forward in our journey together.

Oliver’s Café, Milnrow

Carols at St James 2018

Everyone at St James would like to thank everyone at Wardle Anderson Brass Band a huge “thank you” for supporting us with our annual Carol Service.

St James and Wardle Anderson Brass have a long association and its always a please to welcome them back each year. The night was full of carols and readings and the band entertained the huge congregation of 220+ to a wide range of both traditional and modern Christmas music.

We would also like to thank Andy and Jill Harrison of Fountains and Features of Oldham, for their generous sponsorship of our service.

Carols at St James 2018

This years Carol Service with Wardle Anderson Brass Band will take place in church on Sunday 16th December at 6pm. We are all looking forward to welcoming back Wardle Anderson after this summers phenomenal Concert in support of our War Memorial Restoration Project.
